Stopgap Fix Foolproof (Provisorium Repariert Perfektion), 2022

Handmade sign, lectern

Documenta 15, Installation view at Trafo Haus, Kassel, Germany,

I collaborated with Trinidad’s famed artist and sign maker Bruce Cayonne, Alice Yard, and the Tunis design studio El Warcha (who also participated in Documenta 15).  I came up with the phrase “Stopgap Fix Foolproof”—an attempt to illustrate the problematic circuit of Western reliance on bureaucratic and top-down institutional systems that dictate a singular/“universal” way to conduct “civil” society.

The English and German-translated signs were adhered to the provisional lectern, fabricated with milk crates, by El Warcha. The work was installed at Trafo Haus, a venue that hosts art exhibitions, music projects, performances, workshops, medicinal gardening, and an independent radio station.
