Whispering Domes, Overview, Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 2001
Wood, metal, drywall, paint and fluorescent lights. Installation, h.8’ w.20’ d.12’
Two shallow domes existed in the 8’ ceiling of the gallery; one 6’ in diameter, the other 4’. I lowered the ceiling by 3’ creating a new ceiling height of five feet. Using sheetrock, I extended the domes to this new height of 5’. The domes became deep circular cavities. Upon entering the compressed space, the viewer stood up in one of the two cavities that now felt exaggeratedly bright and expansive after the physical effort to reach them. Once another person entered and spoke, the participants realized that the extended domes have altered the acoustics, varying in each cavity.
