ACA Foods Free Library, in conjunction with the exhibition Rockstone and Bootheel, Real Art Ways, Hartford, CT. March 2010-11.
I installed a functioning library inside ACA Foods market, a West Indian grocery store in Hartford, which has the fourth largest Caribbean population in North America. This exclusively Caribbean library was open to all patrons of the market. The books were organized by category (i.e. region, history, children) and arranged on shelves alongside the customary products and provisions sold in the store. For example, the political titles were found among the hot pepper sauces; children's books were next to biscuits and cookies; Jamaican authors alongside jerk sauces.
