Driftwood, Door, Man, and Boat (Gorée Island/Matinicus Island), 2023
This sculpture consists of three elements— driftwood washed ashore and recovered from Matinicus Island, Maine in 2014 (the remote island is the most eastern location in the United States); an image I photographed while standing at the Door of No Return at the House of Slaves in Senegal in 2010; and a custom steel plinth. The man in the boat and I held each other’s gaze for what felt like an eternity. I decided to document that moment before we “parted.”
