Lettera dal carcere di Birmingham, Letter from Birmingham Jail, 2019

Site-specific audio installation (53 minutes) at Le Murate Progetti Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy,

Still documentation from the installation and audio excerpt.

Le Murate is a former 14th century Florentine convent for cloistered nuns. By the late 19th century Le Murate had been converted to a prison and remained one until 1985. I solicited local activist Antonella Bundu, a first-generation Florentine from Sierra Leone to record an Italian translation of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (1963). This recording (with a background soundscape) was played throughout the former prison section called Carcere Duro (solitary confinement).
