Middle Passages, Le Murate Progetti Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy, 2019
Le Murate was a former Florentine convent for cloistered nuns, dating to the 14th century. By the late 19th century Le Murate had been converted into the prison it remained until 1985. Now it serves as an arts/cultural institution.
Installation. Three Photographic banners each h. 10 ft. w. 13 ft.
Visitors can only access this section of the former prison by viewing it from the lower level (visitors are not allowed up the three flights). The hallway doors leading to the prison cells are kept closed. For this installation, I temporarily opened the doors to photograph the hallways and cells that lie beyond these foreboding doors. Photographic banners of the exposed hallways were installed over the corresponding entrance.
